Kenny Curran wins a very close contest, team victories for Dundrum and Clonmel

The County Men’s and Ladies Junior and Master Road Championships took place in Ballynonty last Saturday night in good running conditions. Well done to the Ballynonty Club for having everything in order.

In the Junior Men’s Race Vincent Molumby of Thurles Crokes ran a great race to win the Men’s title in 10 mins for the 3k distance, great running. Then we had Kevin Moore of Dundrum running well to win the Silver in 10 mins 40 secs. In the Junior Ladies race we had Catherine Kelly of Dundrum making a welcome return to competition and she made it a winning one when coming home a very convincing winner in 12 mins 16 secs. The Silver medal was won by the improving Roisin Ryan of Thurles Crokes in 18mins.

In the Master 6K road race we had some great tussles, none more so than at the front of affairs. Right from the start a group of athletes set the pace and they included the home favourite Kenny Curran of Ballynonty along with the ever improving Billy Phillips of Thurles Crokes as well as David Kenneally of Thurles Crokes. This trio set a strong pace midway through the race and soon it became clear that the winner would come out of this group. All these three athletes were striving to not only win the race but be crowned County 0/35 Champion for 2008. As the leading group came back into the village Billy and Kenny were going all out with David hot on their heels. Then on the downward run to the finish Kenny edged it very close to the finishing line to the cheers of all the local community. Kenny won a great race in 20 mins 50 secs with Billy winning the Silver medal in 20 mins 51 secs and with David Kenneally capturing the Bronze medal in 20 mins 53 secs, a brilliant race and well done to the three athletes for such performances.
