National Medals for Tipp Juveniles & Juniors
Last weekend was a busy time for Tipperary athletes with the National Junior Indoor Championships taking place in Nenagh on Saturday & the National Juvenile Uneven Age Cross Country Championships taking place in Tullamore on Sunday. Over the 2 days, Tipperary athletes had some great results winning a total of 35 National medals. Star athlete over the weekend was Sean Tobin, Clonmel A.C. who took the National title in the Boys U/17 5000m easily overpowering the rest of the field to win his gold medal.
At the Woodie’s DIY AAI Junior Indoor Track & Field Championships in Nenagh Indoor Stadium, a total of 5 Tipperary athletes took part on the day winning 3 Silver National medals. Evan Lynch from Clonmel A.C. won Silver in the Junior Men’s 3km Walk in a time of 13.35.32mins while Carrick-On-Suir A.C. athletes, Shane O’Dwyer & Aoife Bartley also won Silver medals in their events. Shane jumped 1.90m in the Junior Men’s High Jump to win his medal & also came 6th in the Long Jump with a jump of 6.09m. Aoife won her medal in the Junior Women’s Triple Jump with a jump of 11.00m & she also finished 5th in the Long Jump on 5.16m. Congratulations & well done to our 3 National Silver medallists. Brother & sister, Patrick & Eimear Lynch from Newport A.C. also competed very well with Patrick finishing 6th in the Junior Men’s 200m in a time of 24.08sec & Eimear finishing 8th in the Junior Women’s 200m on 28.20sec.
The 2nd event of the weekend was the Woodie’s DIY AAI Juvenile Uneven Age Cross Country Championships in Tullamore. County Clubs whose athletes won National medals were Clonmel A.C., Thurles Crokes A.C., Moycarkey A.C., Nenagh Olympic A.C., Newport A.C. & Moyne A.C. Tipperary athletes had a great day winning 4 individual medals, Sean Tobin, Clonmel A.C., Orlaith Moynihan, Clonmel A.C., Ciara Cummins, Moyne A.C. & Eimear Kennedy, Thurles Crokes A.C., 3 sets of Inter-County medals (Silver in Boys U/17 & Bronze in Girls U/17 & Boys U/11) & 10 Inter-Region medals with Munster (6 gold – Sean Tobin, Michael Carey, Clonmel A.C., Seosamh Ryan, Thurles Crokes A.C., Orlaith Moynihan, Ciara Cummins & Eimear Kennedy; 1 Silver - Emma Fagan, Newport A.C.; 3 Bronze - Cliona Doyle, Clonmel A.C., Niall McIntyre, Nenagh Olympic A.C. & Karen Kennedy, Thurles Crokes A.C.
In the Girls U/11 1500m Emma Fagan from Newport A.C. won a Silver Inter-Region medal with Munster as the 5th scoring member of the team coming home in 16th place. In the Boys U/11 1500m, Tipperary won Bronze Inter-County medals. The Tipperary team was Eoin Purcell, Thurles Crokes A.C. (22nd), Jack Fallon, Moycarkey Coolcroo A.C. (27th), Fred Crowley, Thurles Crokes A.C. (28th), Kieren Moloney, Thurles Crokes A.C. (41st), James Dillon, Moycarkey Coolcroo A.C. (52nd) & Rhys Shelly, Moycarkey Coolcroo A.C. (84th). Thurles Crokes A.C. just missed out on an Inter-Club medal when they finished in 4th place. The team was Eoin Purcell, Fred Crowley, Kieren Moloney & Kevin Bracken.
In the Girls U/13 2500m, Karen Kennedy from Thurles Crokes A.C. won a Bronze Inter-Region medal with Munster as the 4th scoring member of the team finishing in 16th place overall. Seosamh Ryan, Thurles Crokes A.C. earned himself a Gold Inter-Region medal with Munster in the Boys U/13 2500m when he finished in 13th place overall & 6th scoring member of the team. The Girls U/15 3500m produced 2 individual winners for Tipperary with Orlaith Moynihan, Clonmel A.C. finishing in 3rd place & Ciara Cummins, Moyne A.C. in 7th place. Both Girls also won a Gold Inter-Region medal with Munster. The Tipperary Girls team narrowly missed out on an Inter-County medal when they finished 4th overall. The team was Orlaith Moynihan, Ciara Cummins, Laura Loughnane, Nicola Loughnane, Laura Tobin & Megan O’Brien. Niall McIntyre, Nenagh Olympic A.C. finished in 20th place overall in the Boys U/15 3500m & earned himself a Bronze Inter-Region medal with Munster as the 4th scoring member of the team.
In the Girls U/17 4500m, Eimear Kennedy (a sister of Karen Kennedy), Thurles Crokes finished 11th overall winning an individual medal & a Gold Inter-Region medal with Munster as the 4th scoring member of the team. A double celebration in the Kennedy household. Tipperary also won Bronze in the Inter-County competition with Eimear Kennedy, Shauna Hayden, Moycarkey Coolcroo A.C., Adie Bourke, Thurles Crokes A.C., Kora Kerrane, Thurles Crokes A.C., Clare Horgan, Clonmel A.C. & Claire Lawless, Thurles Crokes A.C. making up the team. Thurles Crokes A.C. girls were in hard luck when they finished 4th in the Inter-Club competition. The team was Eimear Kennedy, Adie Bourke, Kora Kerrane & Claire Lawless. In the Boys U/17 5000m, Sean Tobin ran a marvellous race easily reaching the finishing line well ahead of the rest of the field to win the National title & a very well deserved Gold medal. He also won a Gold Inter-Region medal with Munster together with his team-mate, Michael Carey who finished in 18th place & a Silver medal with Tipperary in the Inter-County competition. The Tipperary team was Sean Tobin, Michael Carey, Seamus Hogan, Nenagh Olympic A.C., Jack Corbett, Thurles Crokes A.C., Eoin McIntyre, Nenagh Olympic A.C. & Reece Maher, Clonmel A.C. The Clonmel boys finished in 4th place in the Inter-Club competition. The team was Sean Tobin, Michael Carey, Reece Maher & James Murphy. In the Girls U/19 5000m, our only competitor Cliona Doyle, Clonmel A.C. won a well deserved Bronze Inter-Region medal with Munster as the 3rd scoring member of the team coming home in 24th place. The Munster Star Awards will take place on Saturday 29th January in Cahir House Hotel, Cahir. Congratulations to Aoife Bartley, Carrick-On-Suir A.C. who will receive the “Best Junior Female Athlete” award, Shane Prout, Carrick-On-Suir A.C. who will receive the “Best Junior Male Athlete” Award, Sean Tobin, Clonmel A.C. who will receive the “Best Juvenile Male Cross Country” Award, Chloe Fahy, Nenagh Olympic A.C. who will receive the “Best Juvenile Track & Field Female” Award, Patrick Lynch, Newport A.C. who will receive the “Best Juvenile Track & Field Male” Award, & Breeda Christie, Tipperary Town A.C., our County President who will receive the “Hall of Fame Award” on the night.
