Moyne Open 5K Road Race

The Moyne Athletic Club along with the County Board promoted an Open 5k road race last Sunday. Forty Nine athletes competed on what was a dry but cold day. Right from the start Shane Mullaney of Thurles Crokes set the pace and soon opened up a good lead which he held all the way to the line to win in 16 mins 56 secs. This was a good performance by Shane. Then we had Ross Alexander of Coolquill finishing 2nd in 17 mins 15 secs with Pat Cormack of Ballynonty 3rd in 17 mins 28 secs. The top six were completed by Declan Doherty Thurles Crokes 17 mins 41 secs, Padraig Coen Dundrum 17 mins 49 secs and Andrew Smyth Coolquill 17 mins 55 secs. The first women finisher was Catherine Kelly of Dundrum in 19 mins 52 secs, 2nd Ailbhe Carroll Templemore 20 mins 14 secs, 3rd Mary Moloney Thurles Crokes 21 mins 14 secs with Edel Leahy of Moyne 4th in 22 mins 15 secs, 5th Mary Keane Dundrum 22 mins 56 secs and 6th Serena Moloney Thurles Crokes 23 mins 11 secs.

The race format was “Lucky Dip” with a draw for Prizes based on finishing positions. The County Chairman, Leslie Smyth, thanked the Moyne Athletic Club for such a promotion and it was great to see the event well supported. It is hoped to have another 5k over this course in the near future, so keep up the training.
