County Senior Road Championships 2010

The blue ribbon event of the County Road season takes place in Dundrum this Sunday with the hosting of the County Senior Ladies 5k and Men’s 10K Road Championships. It is fitting that these Championships be promoted by Dundrum Athletic Club who is celebrating 50 years of activity this year, a brilliant achievement. The two races will start at 1 pm. The Ladies will do one lap while the Men will do two laps of the famed Dundrum 10K course. Dundrum will hold their annual 10K on Wednesday 7th July at 8 pm and by all accounts it will be a great sporting event, more details to follow. Back to next Sunday’s race and the Ladies 5K race could prove a great event if athletes like Siobhain O Doherty (Borrisokane), Angela McCann (Clonmel), Martina O Dwyer (Carrick on Suir), and Catherine Kelly (Dundrum) all compete. Siobhain if she starts will be a warm favourite but selecting the other medallists could be hard as the above mentioned athletes as well as Aine Roche (Clonmel), Mary Keane (Dundrum) will all have a say in their destination. In the team event Clonmel, the defending Champions will face good competition from Thurles Crokes, Dundrum and Carrick on Suir. In the Men’s race the defending Champion is Shane Mullaney (Thurles Crokes) and he will face took competition in the defence of his title as such athletes like his club mates Tony Fogarty and William Hughes, the Dundrum duo of John Shanahan and Donal Keane, the Ballynonty duo of Kenny Curran and Danny Smith, Stephen Hunter of Clonmel and the Carrick on Suir duo of Brian and Michael Murphy. If all these athletes compete it should be a Classic. Such competition will also make the team event very competitive with the defending Champions Thurles Crokes, who had only three points to spare over Dundrum last year in Two Mile Borris where Ballynonty won the Bronze medals. These three Clubs will be to the fore again while both Carrick on Suir, Coolquill and Clonmel will also enter stronger teams than last year which will add to the competitive edge. On known form Thurles Crokes will start warm favourites if they get all their squad out, anything less and any of the other above mentioned Clubs could win the coveted title.
