Brilliant entry and competition in Open 5k Fun Run

Moyne was the venue for the 1st 5K road race of 2010 in the County and the event was a great success. The Moyne Athletic Club are to be complimented on having the event well organised and providing the after race refreshments. They are to be complimented on their Indoor development which is taking shape, it will be a fine facility and a great help in developing athletics in the area. It was great to see 57 athletes compete. The race was started by Moyne’s Mr Athletics – John Flynn and it was great to see the course well marshalled throughout the route. The Race started and soon a group of three set the pace, they were Ruaidhri Devitt of Dundrum, Brendan Delaney of Coolquill and Stephen Hunter of Clonmel. They went through 1k in 3 mins 30 secs, 2k in 7 mins and 3k in 9 mins 28 secs. At this stage Stephen Hunter went into the lead and came home a convincing winner in 17 mins 18 secs, 2nd was Ruaidhri Devitt of Dundrum in 17 mins 49 secs with Brendan Delaney of Coolquill 3rd in 18 mins 3 secs. But the winners of this event were everyone that participated and the organisers gave out seventeen prizes in a Lucky Dip Draw based on finishing positions and the lucky winners were Jim Cummins, Paddy Doyle, Patricia Cummins, Edel Leahy, Eileen Ryan, Maire Ryan, Dermot Campion, Damien McDonald – all Moyne, Bobby Farrell, Con Corbett – both Thurles Crokes, Willie Fogarty – Slieveardagh, Andrew Smyth, Tadgh Vaughan, Brendan Delaney – all Coolquill, Stephen Hunter – Clonmel, Ruaidhri Devitt – Dundrum and Neillie Hall – Ballynonty. Such was the response to this event that the organisers have decided to hold another 5k road race over this course on Sunday 7th March at 12 noon. To give an incentive to all who participated today, the organisers have decided that there will be a Special Prize for the Man and Woman who improve the most on today’s performance on March 7th, so keep up the training and let that be your target on March 7th
